What are the Penalties for Speeding?
You receive points on your license each time you get convicted on a speeding ticket. If you get enough points, your driver’s license will be suspended. Even if you do not get enough points for a suspension, your insurance rates can increase dramatically. Also, you will get a civil penalty called the Driver Responsibility Assessment any year that you have 6 points or more on your drivers license. You get a $300 surcharge for the first 6 points, and an extra $75 for each additional point over the six points. The surcharge is payable over three years but failure to make a payment will result in a suspension of your driver’s license or your privilege to operate a motor vehicle in New York.
The surcharges apply even to out-of-state drivers. Often people from Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or other states will pay a fine for a speeding ticket, go home, and then find a notice about the surcharge. They may throw it away, thinking it must be a mistake. Their license to drive in New York will then be suspended, and they could easily get pulled over again and charged with a very serious crime.
